Martin D-28 Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1972), made in Nazareth, PA, serial # 307127, natural finish, rosewood back and sides, spruce top; mahogany neck with ebony fingerboard, original molded blue plastic hard shell case.

Overall length is 41 in. (104.1 cm.), 15 3/4 in. (40 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 15/16 in. (12.5 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 25 1/2 in. (648 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.).

This is a relatively clean guitar overall showing not too much evidence of heavy play time but with a few typical old repairs. Overall the finish shows only small dings, dents, and scrapes with no large areas of wear. The back of the neck has some small touched-up capo dings and very shallow dents in the lower positions...this is all fairly inconspicuous. The back and sides have only very minor wear, and the only pickwear to the top is a bit of loss to the upper sound hole rim.

The original bridge has been reglued and there is some visible repair to the spruce around the perimeter, with some noticeable finish touch up at the upper bass side corner. Adjacent to this is a cleated grain crack in the standard spot off the top edge of the pickguard. Viewed from the front this is not the neatest repair but solidly done. There are no other cracks to the instrument. The pickguard is a very good-looking replacement; the original black acetate guards from this period have often shriveled to an approximation of a licorice potato chip by now!

This guitar has had a recent neckset and is an excellent playing example with a better action than many. What appear to be the original frets show very little wear, though there is some minor divoting to the fingerboard in the first position. It looks like perhaps someone with sharp fingernails played a lot of D and G chords. This is a very attractive period D-28 with a lovely very straight grain to the Indian rosewood on the back and sides, just the way Martin still preferred it in the early '70s. It is still housed in the original molded blue plastic case Martin had recently introduced at the time. Excellent - Condition.
C. F.
