Martin D-18 Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1963), made in Nazareth, PA, serial # 191766, natural lacquer finish, mahogany back, sides and neck, spruce top, rosewood fingerboard, black hard shell case.

This is a fine sounding D-18 from the final heyday of the "Folk Era" of the 1960's, just before the Beatles brought electricity roaring back into the guitar mainstream. From its introduction in the early 1930s on, the D-18 has been a workhorse for country, gospel, folk and other forms of American vernacular music. Back in the 1960s, it was practically the emblem of the Folk Revival and, today, it still is the acoustic guitar of choice for pickers of every persuasion.

This 1963 D-18 has appointments typical of the era; The pickguard and binding are tortoise celluloid, the rosewood bridge has the long through saddle and the tuners are Kluson Deluxe with metal buttons. The headstock's "rounded" corners are characteristic of this period, the result of Martin's shaping templates becoming worn from extensive use. This guitar sings with a big but still bright and clear sound, an excellent instrument for just about and flat-top application.

Overall length is 41 in. (104.1 cm.), 15 3/4 in. (40 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 7/8 in. (12.4 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 25 1/2 in. (648 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.). A nice original guitar overall, with some wear but an excellent player. There are some isolated wear spots to the top but less pickwear than we often see, just a bit above the soundhole. There is one spot just off the pickguard that looks like a small cigarette burn (Everybody smoked when this guitar was new!) There is a very small repaired pickguard shrinkage crack on either side if the 'guard, but no other top cracks. The back of the neck shows some fairly deep dings between the second and fifth frets either from a capo or being rested against something long ago. The back shows some small touched-up areas on the lower bass bout. Very loud and fairly bright sounding, this D-18 has just emerged from a very cleanly executed neck set with plenty of saddle and good frets for the next 50 years. A fine gigging or recording D-18 from the last year of the old North Street Factory. Excellent - Condition.
C. F.
