Martin 000-28 Norman Blake Signature Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (2004), made in Nazareth, PA, serial # 1002417, natural finish, rosewood back and sides, spruce top: mahogany neck, ebony fingerboard, original black tolex hard shell case.

Martin's Norman Blake Signature 000-28 is quite an interesting take on the "vintage guitar that never was" concept. It is built on a rosewood herringbone 000 size body shaped like a 14 fret model, but the neck joins at the 12th fret. This results in the bridge being located nearer the center of the lower bout, adding depth to the tone and strengthening the bass response. It's sort of a Martin version of the early 1930's 12-fret Gibson flat tops that Norman is known to favor, a hybrid that actually works very well.

Other features include beautiful straight-grained rosewood back and sides, a spruce top with scalloped braces and a modified V-shape neck with a 19 fret ebony fretboard sporting shaped pearl inlay. The top has herringbone trim with an ivoriod outer layer and Style 28 rosette, an ebony bridge and the traditional tortoise plastic pickguard. The headstock overlay features Martin's Golden Era decal and Waverly open gear engraved strip tuners with ivoroid buttons. The label is signed by Norman Blake and C.F. Martin IV and identifies this guitar as #103 of the limited edition. There is a K&K Pure Mini pickup installed for amplified use. This is a lovely and super practical twist on Martin's traditional designs, and has apparently served Norman Blake himself as a recording instrument since its inception.

Overall length is 38 1/4 in. (97.2 cm.), 15 1/4 in. (38.7 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 in. (10.2 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 3/4 in. (44 mm.).

This guitar shows some handling marks overall but appears very little used or played since 2004. The top has some tiny dings and scuffing to the pickguard but beyond this wear to the instrument is minimal. This is an excellent playing and sounding instrument, a really fine example of what Martin is capable of in a modern but tradition-inspired instrument. The original HSC is included. Excellent + Condition.
C. F.
