Martin 0-28 Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar, c. 1883, made in Nazareth, PA, natural finish, Brazilian rosewood back and sides, spruce top; mahogany neck with ebony fingerboard.

A very interesting piece of Martin history, and an old guitar with a "lot 'o soul"! This 0-28 dates from the last quarter of the 19th century, at which time it would have been one of the larger guitars offered by Martin. The 0-28 was considered the best Martin guitar for concert work; the small sizes were often fancier, but were considererd "parlor" not "concert" instruments. The "Peg Head" as Martin called it (the solid headstock with rear-mounted peg tuners) was also a specific option ordered by the customer-the 0-28 came standard at this time with the familiar slotted head and geared tuners.

The back and sides are figured Brazilian rosewood, the herringbone top trim and chain backstrip are typical style 28 features which continue to this day. All binding is ivory. The guitar is marked with the pre-1898 "C.F. Martin & Co. New York" stamp, although made (like all Martins after 1838) in Nazareth PA. While not dated or serial numbered (typical for 19th century Martins) this guitar carries a handwritten label on the inner back reading "Presented by my mother Mary Fay Barnum to my father Thomas Barnum May 3rd 1883 -Curtis T. Barnum".

Overall length is 38 in. (96.5 cm.), 13 1/2 in. (34.3 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 1/4 in. (10.8 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 13/16 in. (46 mm.). Structurally very good, this guitar has undergone a long-ago refinish which has left the top, in particular, rather less attractive than it might be. The finish is very thin hand rubbed varnish, and looks to possibly be 100+ years old. The back of the neck appears original, with some visible play wear. Four of the original "lollopop" ivory tuning pegs are still intact; two are replaced with similar period banjo pegs.

There are surprizingly few repairs; one small grain crack in the side on the upper bass bout. The bar frets are original; except for the refinish the guitar appears little altered with original bone bridgepins, endpin and saddle intact. Overall Very Good Condition.
C. F.
