Gibson Uke-2 Model Soprano Ukulele, c. 1926, made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, natural mahogany finish, mahogany body and neck, rosewood fingerboard, black chipboard case.
This is a superb and most likely early example of the 1920s Gibson "Uke-2", the company's midline model in the pre-war period. This model was slotted between the company's plainest ukulele, the Uke-1, and the fancy multi-bound and heavily inlaid Uke-3 in the line that debuted in 1926. The Uke-2 is generally stylistically similar to the Martin Style 2 and features all mahogany construction with a triple-bound top and half-herringbone soundhole ring. The fingerboard has a simple 3-dot inlay with a bone nut, and a bone saddle on the bridge. The headstock features a silver paint stencil "The Gibson" logo and high-grade Grover friction tuners. This is a super nice uke, and an awfully cute piece of Gibsonia!
Overall length is 20 3/8 in. (51.8 cm.), 6 3/8 in. (16.2 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 2 1/4 in. (5.7 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 13 3/4 in. (349 mm.). Width of nut is 1 7/16 in. (36 mm.).
This uke remains all original and very nice overall. There is very little play wear. The top shows none of the typical strum markings and is cleaner than most; there is some finish scuffing, mostly on the back, but amazingly enough no cracks or repairs. This is a very good-sounding and playing ukulele, better than most of the Gibsons we have had. With a very thin top, lightly braced, this uke is a bit brighter than most similar Martins but with a nice even tone. A super example complete with a worn but functional original light-duty hardshell case. Excellent - Condition.
