Gibson Dove Custom Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1977), made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, black lacquer finish, maple back and sides, spruce top; laminated maple neck with ebony fingerboard, original black hard shell case.

The Gibson flat tops of the 1970's don't get a lot of respect these days, but some of them are actually surprisingly good instruments-especially for the time. This gleaming black Dove Custom is certainly a striking guitar to look at, but also plays very well with a good dose of the typical Gibson midrange ring. The black finish is unusual on this model, and makes a great contrast to the engraved, pearl inlaid pickguard and bridge. The maple body imparts an extra snap to the square-shouldered body's tonal response, making this a good recording or band rhythm guitar. While braced more heavily than the earlier 1960's Doves, this guitar compensates with a much lighter solid-saddle bridge, and the sound is in the same league. Absolutely one of the nicest '70's Gibson flat tops we have had, in exceptional condition.

Overall length is 41 1/4 in. (104.8 cm.), 16 in. (40.6 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 7/8 in. (12.4 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 25 1/2 in. (648 mm.).
