Guild D-35 Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1968), made in Hoboken, NJ, serial # OJ-163, natural lacquer finish, mahogany back and sides, spruce top; laminated mahogany neck, original black hard shell case.
The D-35, introduced in 1968, was Guild's lower/midline Dreadnought flat top in the late '60's. It has the same woods and features (mahogany body and neck with a spruce top) as the earlier D-40 but plainer trim - visually much like a Martin D-18. This particular guitar is an early example of the model, the serial number indicates the 63rd instrument off the line in 1968. The D-35 was a successful model right away but was soon simplified further and lost its headstock overlay as production was transferred to Guild's new Westerly factory in 1969. That makes this 1968 model a fairly rare guitar, as D-35's were only built in Hoboken for less than two years.
Overall length is 41 1/2 in. (105.4 cm.), 15 7/8 in. (40.3 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 3/4 in. (12.1 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 25 1/2 in. (648 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.). Overall this is a very nice comfortable player, used but not abused. The bridge has been reglued and lowered, and the top center seam resealed; no other major repair is evident. There is finish wear dings and small chips overall, the only really major loss is an area of spotting on the back where the finish appears to have been burned through either by embers or some sort of chemical action. Odd, but not a structural issue! The headstock veneer has shrunk up a bit as is typical but is still intact. Overall a good sounding old Guild, brighter than many Dreadnought size guitars with a nice ring. Very Good + Condition.
