Kay Old Kraftsman K-25 Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar, c. 1954, made in Chicago, natural lacquer finish, mahogany back, sides and neck, spruce top, rosewood fingerboard.
This big-bodied Kay is a somewhat unusual guitar for the early 1950's-a 17" Jumbo cutaway flattop. The K-25 features mahogany body with a spruce top with an unusual "Schmoo" shaped soundhole and screw-on pickguard. The expansive top is ladder braced and carries a subtle sunburst finish. The neck is big and chunky, with a very grainy rosewood fingerboard inlaid with a large dot pattern. This example was sold not through Kay themselves but the Speigel catalog company, and carries their in-house "Old Kraftsman" brand on the headstock stencil. A cool and fairly unique 1950's guitar, and a nice example
Overall length is 43 in. (109.2 cm.), 17 1/16 in. (43.3 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 1/4 in. (10.8 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 25 3/4 in. (654 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.). Appears all original except tuners (repro Kluson) with some average wear (mostly to the top-one large armwear rub and numerous small dings and pick scratches). Has had a neck set, still a medium playing action but this guitar has a big sound that really responds to a vigorous strum. Excellent - Condition.
