Fender Champ 5F1 Model Tube Amplifier (1958), made in Fullerton, California, serial # C-06179, tweed fabric covering finish.
Height is 11 3/4 in. (29.8 cm.), 13 1/4 in. (33.7 cm.) width, and 6 1/2 in. (16.5 cm.) deep.
This is a played-in but great sounding early 1958 example of the classic tweed Fender Champ 5F1, looking somewhat used and showing signs of what was likely Fender authorized service long ago. The tube-chart ink-stamp is "HA" indicating it was wired up in January of 1958. It has a replaced power transformer, a Better Coil & Transformer Co. part stamped 831 6635 indicating it was made in 1966. These were a standard Fender part in the CBS era, making it likely this substitution was done at a Fender authorized service center. The output transformer has no visible marking, but is an original Triad #106. The speaker is a 1972 Fender-branded Oxford marked 465 7221, likely indicating it was also replaced at a Fender dealership around that time. After all, this hard-working little amp was almost 25 years old in '72!
The amp was originally wired by Lilly, with her hastily-scribbled masking tape name tag still in place. It has recently been serviced; this included standard filter cap job with replaced electrolytics, a grounded 3-prong cord, cleaned sockets, pots, and jacks, and a re-biasing to spec. No further circuit changes have been made. The tubes are recent JJ preamp and power, with a '70s RCA rectifier, possibly dating to that same circa 1972 overhaul.
Externally the tweed is a bit dirty overall with typical worn areas along the seams and edges and a stained spots, fairly heavily spotted on the bottom. The leather handle is a high quality replacement. The faceplate shows some scuffing and light corrosion with not too much loss to the stenciled graphics. While not 1005 original this amp still runs perfectly to spec, a working tool for a long time it would appear. It is worn in but not TOO beat up, another great-sounding vibey late '50s tweed Champ, a perennial favorite amp -- small in size but a monster in tone! Very Good + Condition.
