Fender Deluxe Model 5B3 Model Tube Amplifier (1953), made in Fullerton, California, serial # 7110, tweed fabric covering finish.

This is a very nice early wide-panel tweed Deluxe, one of Leo Fender's all-time classic amplifiers. The tube chart in this model 5B3 is just too early to carry a date code; Fender did not begin stamping a 2-letter code signifying the production date there until sometime in 1953. This amp would have been assembled in the first quarter of that year based on the serial number and component dates. The original 12" blue Jensen P-12R speaker is coded to the 50th week of 1952 and the visible pot dates are to the 32nd week of that year. This one was wired up by Lily, one of the more prolific of Fender's electronic assemblers whose masking-tape signature tag appears in many early amps.

The 1953-4 Fender Deluxe is an all-time classic, often regarded as one of the best small gigging and recording amps ever designed. This example remains a very fine-sounding unit, both clean and cranked to "12"...yes, that's one past "11". Just a bit worn-in, this Deluxe has been well-maintained and is ready to rock for another 65+ years. The back panel has a worn decal indicating it spent some time at Torp's Music Center and School in St. Paul, a major Fender dealer in the 1950s and beyond.

Height is 16 1/4 in. (41.3 cm.), 18 in. (45.7 cm.) width, and 8 5/8 in. (21.9 cm.) deep.

This amp has seen some use but has survived in fine original condition looking and sounding great. Externally the tweed shows some typical wear mostly to the corners and edges. There is a small tear on the top by the control panel. The chrome panel itself has just some light corrosion (mostly around the fuse holder and pilot lamp) and some minimal loss to the graphics but is cleaner than many.

Internally the amp has had some typical service repairs. There has been a thorough cap job and the cord is a new 3-prong. The original circuit is otherwise unaltered. The power tubes are recent, the others period. The handle is a very high quality replacement. This amp sounds fantastic, with a lot of clarity at lower volumes, but it really roars when pushed. Excellent - Condition.
