Danocaster Single Cut Formerly Owned by Steely Dan's Walter Becker Model Solid Body Electric Guitar, c. 2013, made in Nashville, TN, Blonde lacquer finish, ash body, maple neck, molded black plastic hard shell case.

Nashville-based Danocaster Guitars -- the tradename of luthier Dan Strain -- was until its recent closure the pro's "go-to" source lately for expertly built vintage-looking Fender-style instruments. Strain's guitars replicate the played-in feel of a vintage Fullerton piece better than just about anything on the market, but the company is closed and no new models are currently being built as demand simply became too much for the small operation. This is an older example, built around 2013 and actually played-in, though on these the custom aging process and any actual play wear blend to the point of invisibility.

This is one of several Danocasters owned and used by Steely Dan's Walter Becker, who often was supportive of up-and-coming luthiers like Strain. The guitar is built in the style of an early Broadcaster/NoCaster with a blonde ash body and maple neck, with the namesake black pickguard, flat pole pickup, and all slot head screws. It has a simple "Danocaster" logo on the not-quite Fender-shaped headstock. At 6.6 lbs. this is absolutely one of the nicest and best-handling "Vintage" Tele recreations we have had; a great-playing and sounding guitar built with very high quality components. There are several minor variations from the original 1951 pattern -- notably a slimmer neck profile and the "pat. Pending" stamped bridge has staggered brass saddles for better intonation -- but from a serious "Tele" player's standpoint this Blackguard-style guitar is hard to beat if an original early '50s Fullerton-made guitar is not an option.

Overall length is 38 3/4 in. (98.4 cm.), 12 3/4 in. (32.4 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 3/4 in. (4.4 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 25 1/2 in. (648 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.).

This heavily "reliced" guitar has plenty of wear, virtually all of which appears to be intentionally added part of the design. It plays and sounds excellent and nails the "blackguard" vibe as only the finest re-creations do. It includes the molded HSC with Becker's studio storage markings on the side. Excellent + Condition.
