Hagstrom I Model F-11 Model Solid Body Electric Guitar (1965), made in Sweden, serial # 639305, blue finish, wood body with acrylic overlay, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, black gig bag case.
The Swedish-made Hagstrom line of guitars was imported to the US at the height of the '60s guitar boom by Mershon Musical Products of New York. They were built to a fairly high standard, well-engineered and relatively inexpensive, especially compared to some other European imports. They sold quite well and became something of a garage band classic, many aspiring rocker's first decent guitar or bass carried the Hagstrom brand.
The Hagstrom I series bodies were built with a clear back-painted acrylic front mounted to a plywood core which was sheathed in thin colored vinyl. This sandwich method was a bit unorthodox but resulted in a lightweight and very colorful-looking instrument. The necks are VERY slim, reinforced with a very sophisticated metal-sheathed truss rod system ("The Hagstrom Secret" according to the catalogs) that keeps them very true over time and very easy to play. The two pickups are rather Strat-like in tone, controlled by a single master volume knob and a bank of switches allowing on/off for each, as well as "Mute" and "Tone" functions. This example has the earlier style round-corner pickup covers.
These light and super handy guitars were very popular with amateur teen combos in the mid-late '60s and are still an excellent bargain in a good quality vintage solid body guitar. In general Hagstrom Is are not particularly rare, but this sharp-looking F-11 finished in the less-common vibrant blue is one of the cooler examples we have had.
Overall length is 39 5/8 in. (100.6 cm.), 13 in. (33 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 3/8 in. (3.5 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 25 5/8 in. (651 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.).
This is a nicely original guitar overall, with a patched area to the finish on the back of the neck and some light average wear overall. There is some shrinkage to the vinyl covering at the edges, which is typical on these. Everything is original and complete except the screw that locks the vibrato arm is missing and the jack has been replaced. The outer jack area on the plastic top has never been cracked at all and the vibrato arm itself is intact, two things often not found on these. This is a good sounding and playing guitar; a nice and very sharp-looking example of this Swedish-made garage band classic in its distinctive light blue livery. Excellent - Condition.
