Danelectro Standard Model 5025 Model Semi-Hollow Body Electric Guitar (1960), made in Neptune, NJ, formica with vinyl siding finish, Masonite and poplar body; basswood neck with rosewood fingerboard, black gig bag case.

This is a great playing and sounding example of a rare variation on one of the classic vintage Danelectro guitars, the Shorthorn Standard model. While the Shorthorn guitar and bass in black or copper lacquer finishes are fairly common as old Dannos go, this model 5025 is a cosmetic anomaly. The stock number was carried over from the short-lived "Companion' model, a two pickup version of the fully hollow "Convertible". That instrument proved an impractical idea-the top was too flimsy with the second pickup cutout too close to the bridge. The cosmetic look with the "kitchen counter" top and back was applied to the semi-hollow shorthorn and this model was born! It was produced only for a few years and in much smaller numbers than the other Standard shorthorn versions.

Apart from its quirky Populuxe finish this 1960 guitar has the defining 1960 Dan-o features: semi-hollow Masonite and pine body with white pebble vinyl side covering Masonite "seal shaped" pickguard and the 3-way adjustable metal bridge with a rosewood saddle. The twin lipstick tube pickups are wired in series like most Dannos and controlled with concentric volume and tone knobs, mated to a 3-way pickup selector switch. The 21-fret neck has a Brazilian rosewood fingerboard and is topped with the trademark "coke bottle" headstock marked with a stenciled Danelectro logo, and mounting the earlier style Waverly strip tuners. This is a fine sounding guitar with the classic Danno twang factor; structurally and sonically identical to the celebrated "Jimmy Page" model with the only difference being the body and neck finish.

Overall length is 38 in. (96.5 cm.), 12 7/8 in. (32.7 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 5/8 in. (4.1 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 25 in. (635 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.). This old Danno is all original with some average wear, dings and dents mostly to the edges of the body and pickguard. The top finish has some checking and general wear, but overall the guitar looks great with a very played-in feel. The frets are excellent and this rates as one of the best playing Standards we have had, and a real looker to boot! Excellent - Condition.
