Fender Precision Bass Model Solid Body Electric Bass Guitar (1965), made in Fullerton, California, serial # L64995, sunburst lacquer finish, alder body, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, original black tolex hard shell case.

This is a fine VERY early CBS-era Fender bass still retaining all pre-CBS features, the look, feel, and sound unchanged from instruments made in later 1964. The features of this particular period usually include a thin rosewood fingerboard with pearl dot inlay; we have seen these marked as early as December 1964. This particular neck is date marked FEB 65 but still has the older-style clay dots; this is the latest-dated clay-dot fingerboard we have seen and just shows how uneven these transitions often were. The neck also is finished in the thin Pre-CBS lacquer with the original early '60s smaller fretwire.

The headstock carries the "transition" silver Fender logo decal, which appeared in the spring of '64. The pickguard is still the Pre-CBS style tortoiseshell pattern nitrocellulose, which had just about disappeared by this point to be replaced by a thinner plastic piece. The finish is a bit mellower than the vibrant "target" sunburst typical of 1965 and retains very bold color with minimal fade.

This bass was assembled in early 1965 (the pots are coded 6512) and has seen some moderate use but no abuse since then. It has a sound a bit brighter than the earlier '60s models that warms up nicely when the tone knob is rolled off a bit. A great example of the world's standard electric bass, still ruler of the roost 50+ years on and ready for the next half-century of low end action.

Overall length is 45 3/4 in. (116.2 cm.), 13 in. (33 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 5/8 in. (4.1 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 34 in. (864 mm.). Width of nut is 1 3/4 in. (44 mm.).

This bass shows some light wear to the finish but remains in completely original condition, with no repairs or alterations. The body has small dings and dents and a spot of armwear at the top waist down through the top finish coats, and a small belt buckle wear spot on the back. The back of the neck is worn down a bit, but the small frets show very little wear.

It appears the bass has carried flatwound strings since new; it came in with Fender flats from the '70s that looked to have been on since then. The original black tolex "no logo" case is also very clean and this 8 lb 10 oz bass is an excellent player -- one of the nicest Precisions we have had in a while. Excellent Condition.
