Fender Mustang Model Solid Body Electric Guitar (1966), made in Fullerton, California, red lacquer finish, alder body, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, gig bag case.
This is a VERY well-played but original 1966 Fender Mustang, made less than two years after the model's debut in 1964. The Mustang was Fender's classiest student guitar, basically a Duo-Sonic with the new "Dynamic Vibrato" tailpiece and a floating bridge. The model was instantly successful and has proved a timeless favorite with countless garage bands from the 1960s and '70s until today.
The features of the instrument are typical for this year. The body on sports a red lacquer finish with a lot of wear nut not much fade. The pickguard is laminated plastic with a white pearloid top layer. The neck is the smaller of two sizes offered on this model with an "A" width of 1 1/2" at the nut and has a short 22 1/2" scale length. This smaller "student" neck was a catalog option but in practice did not prove popular on the Mustang, making it a relatively rare feature.
The heel of the neck shows no date-stamp markings which is unusual but not unheard of in that year. Fender production was at its absolute height at the time and over 16,000 Mustangs alone were shipped out in that single 12-month period. The code stamped into the potentiometers dates to the 11th week of 1966, and the serial number stamped on the neckplate verifies 1966 as the year of assembly.
This was the most popular electric guitar in the world in 1966, with more sold than any other competitive instrument. The early Mustang remains an American classic and is still a great deal in an original 1960s Fender guitar!
Overall length is 39 3/4 in. (101 cm.), 12 1/4 in. (31.1 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 1/2 in. (3.8 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 22 1/2 in. (572 mm.). Width of nut is 1 1/2 in. (38 mm.).
This is an extremely well-worn but all original guitar, with a cool New York "punky" vibe. There is heavy finish wear to all the body finish, mostly on the edges, and a bit of amateur touch-up. The remains of a 1970s Whirlpool "Snake" cable sticker adorns the back. The frets show some G&P work and surprisingly still have decent height and the guitar plays fine. The vibrato arm is missing; otherwise, it is complete and unaltered. A cool and good-sounding player's example of a "small neck" Mustang, in what is sometimes referred to as "Beat but Sweet" condition. Very Good + Condition.
