Fender Mustang Model Solid Body Electric Guitar (1966), made in Fullerton, California, serial # 144466, Daphne Blue lacquer finish, alder body, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, original grey hard shell case.
This is a very attractive and extremely well-preserved 1966 Fender Mustang, made less than two years after the model's debut in the second half of 1964. The Mustang was Fender's classiest student guitar, basically a Duo-Sonic with the new "Dynamic vibrato" tailpiece and a floating bridge. The model was instantly successful and has proved a timeless favorite of countless garage bands from the 1960s and '70s until today.
The body on this example sports a lovely blue lacquer finish with virtually no yellowing or fade and the pickguard is laminated plastic with a white pearloid top layer. The neck is dated March 1966, the pots coded to the 18th week of that year, and a pickup dated 6-13-66. This was the most popular electric guitar in the world in 1966, with more sold than any other competitive instrument. The early Mustang remains an American classic and is still a great deal in an original 1960s Fender guitar!
Overall length is 39 1/2 in. (100.3 cm.), 12 1/4 in. (31.1 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 1/2 in. (3.8 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 24 in. (610 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.).
A very clean and original guitar, showing only some very light wear. There is one decent-sized ding on the bottom edge and a few smaller dents and chips, but overall the blue finish has a great look with just some minor checking and almost no fade. The finish on the back has staining from where a setlist -- or something similar -- was left taped there for a long time. The chrome is still very shiny with minimal wear.
The guitar shows one fairly minor alteration: the pickups, pots, and wiring are all original, but the two slider switches look to have been neatly replaced some time ago. This is not uncommon, as these particular parts often fail over time; the guitar could easily be restored to all original with a correct vintage set of switches if desired.
Other than this, the guitar is one of the cleanest and most original we have had. The frets and fingerboard show light wear in the lower positions but the guitar remains an excellent player, complete with the oft-lost trem arm and a clean original case. Excellent + Condition.
