Fender Jazzmaster Model Solid Body Electric Guitar (1965), made in Fullerton, California, sunburst lacquer finish, alder body, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, original black hard shell case.
This is a great-playing example of an early CBS Fender Jazzmaster with a neck date-stamped May 1965, only a few months after Leo's company had been sold into corporate slavery! The pots carry a date code for the 19th week of 1965, and the appointments show a mix of features specific to this period. The very "tight" sunburst finish with a large yellow center and minimal color blending is typical of 1965.
The unbound rosewood fingerboard has the pearl dots adopted right about this time; binding would be added before the fall of '65. The tortoise plastic (not nitrocellulose) laminated pickguard was also a new feature at this time. The neckplate still shows the pre-CBS style "L" number, typical of this transition period. This very fine-sounding and playing Jazzmaster, with some playwear but overall nicely original and unaltered.
Overall length is 41 1/16 in. (104.3 cm.), 14 in. (35.6 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 5/8 in. (4.1 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 25 1/2 in. (648 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.).
This guitar shows some general wear but remains all original except for a very well done refret. There are dings and dents to the body finish mostly on the edges with some larger belt buckle spots through the finish into the wood on the back. The neck lacquer is worn down with that glorious "old Fender" feel. The trem arm and one bridge screw are more recent but everything else is original and works as Leo intended. This Jazzmaster is lighter than many from this period and is an easy handling and fine-playing and sounding guitar. Excellent - Condition.
