Fender Competition Mustang Model Solid Body Electric Guitar (1969), made in Fullerton, California, serial # 226101, Candy Apple Red with Racing Stripe finish, alder body, maple neck, rosewood fingerboard, original grey hard shell case.
This is a nicely original and well-preserved Competition Red Mustang, slightly worn-in but unaltered. This guitar was built at the very beginning of the run for this rather whimsical "Competition" version of the model, with the Candy Apple Red metallic "car" finish and "racing" stripe on the body and a snazzy matching headstock.
Originally introduced in 1964, the Mustang was Leo Fender's last original design for the company that bore his name. Although intended as a student model, the easy handling short scale model with vibrato has been used by many professionals over the decades since and endured as a classic in its own right. This one has a neck stamped 16 JAN 69B and pots dated to the 31st week of 1966, marking it as one of the first of the new "Competition" style and one of the last of the cool original 1960s models.
Overall length is 39 3/4 in. (101 cm.), 12 1/4 in. (31.1 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 5/8 in. (4.1 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 24 in. (610 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.).
This guitar shows some general wear overall but remains in all-original condition. There are some dings and dents to the body finish, mostly on the edges. The back of the neck is overall quite clean, but there is a dent on the bass side just around the 12th fret, and a deep dig on the treble side between the first and second frets from rubbing against the securing strap screw on the neckrest in the case. The hardware shows some corrosion, but nothing too severe. The guitar has just had a perfect period-style refret and plays extremely well, and includes the original case with some vintage sticker decoration. Excellent - Condition.
