C. F. Martin Style A Model Flat Back Mandolin (1953), made in Nazareth, PA, serial # A-20905, natural lacquer finish, mahogany body and neck, spruce top, black hard shell case.
Overall length is 24 in. (61 cm.), 9 5/8 in. (24.4 cm.) width, and 3 in. (7.6 cm.) deep. Scale length is 13 in. (330 mm.). Width of nut is 1 1/8 in. (29 mm.).
This mandolin is generally well-preserved overall, showing some play time for its 66+ years on the planet but not abused. The original lacquer finish shows some checking and typical wear including dings, dents, and scrapes. There are a couple of deeper marks on the sides, likely from rubbing against the old chipboard case. There are a couple of small chips in the top of the ebony nut that do not affect functionality.
This mandolin has all original finish and hardware including the strip Waverly tuners and carved ebony bridge and remains complete, including the oft-missing tailpiece cover. It has had the fingerboard trued and been refretted with correct style wire. It is lovely to play with a low comfortable action and the bright bouncy tone typical of Martin As. This is a nice example of this often-ignored Martin model and an excellent old time or general recording mandolin. Very Good + Condition.
