Regal Tiple (1928), made in Chicago, natural lacquer finish, mahogany back and sides, spruce top; poplar neck with ebomized fingerboard.
This is a relatively nice Chicago-made 1920's Tiple, built of mahogany and spruce but with fancier ornamentation than the similar Martin T-18. The top is bound with white celluloid and fairly fancy colored wood marquetry around the edge and soundhole, with a dyed maple bridge. The "ebonized" (dyed maple) fingerboard has pearl dot inlay. There is a 1920's Regal "Mark of Better instruments" oval paper label in the soundhole This particular tiple is good sounding and better made than many similar period instruments, not up to Martin standards perhaps but a solid instrument. It includes a neat little handwritten note detailing the original purchase in March 1929-something we wish EVERY old instrument came with!
Overall length is 27 9/16 in. (70 cm.), 9 in. (22.9 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 3 1/16 in. (7.8 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 16 5/8 in. (422 mm.). Width of nut is 1 9/16 in. (40 mm.). All original with some scratches and scuffs to the finish (mostly on the back) but no major wear or crack repairs. The neck has been reset and the bridge reglued, making this as good a player as most (non-Martin!) Tiples, with a richer tone than many. Overall Excellent - Condition.
