Fender Stratocaster Model Solid Body Electric Guitar (1964), made in Fullerton, California, sunburst lacquer finish, alder body, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, original black hard shell case.
This is a beautiful example of a late Pre-CBS Stratocaster, played but not abused with the typical features for the time. The neck sports the older Pre-CBS style small headstock with the newer "transition" gold logo decal. The rosewood fingerboard still has the earlier "clay" dot inlay that would be phased out at the end of 1964 (soon after this guitar was made) replaced by pearl dots. The sunburst finish is a fairly light and better blended variant on the "bullseye" bursts that would become the norm in 1965. The pickguard is the lovely slightly greenish nitrocellulose that would also disappear by the beginning of 1965, replaced by plainer white plastic. The neck is dated September 1964, the pots to the 26th week of that year. This is simply a great sounding Strat built shortly before "things started a-changin" in Fullerton after the January 1965 sell-out to CBS. This Strat is a fine unmolested example of the high summer of Fender, still housed in its original black Tolex case.
Overall length is 39 3/4 in. (101 cm.), 12 3/4 in. (32.4 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 3/4 in. (4.4 cm.) deep. Scale length is 25 1/2 in. (648 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.).
This guitar remains in lovely original condition with some typical play wear, well played but not abused. The finish shows a fairly even distribution of small dings and dents overall, with more wear in the armwear area and to the body edges (from contact with the case, as is typical) and a decent size spot of buckle wear to the wood on the back. The guitar has been very neatly refretted with the correct style wire, just a bit taller than the original with many years of life left. The "green" nitro pickguard has some typical shrinking, with a noticeable crack to the edge on the bass side of the neck pickup and a smaller crack on the treble side through the screw hole as well. The very tip of the pickguard on the treble side horn of the body is missing, popped off at the screwhole-the rest of the screws are fully intact. The volume knob appears original but the two tone knobs are not perfectly matched to it and appear slightly later, possibly 1970's. Apart from this the guitar retains its original hardware and electronics (including the original 3-way switch) show undisturbed solder joints. The 3-color sunburst is still quite vibrant with minimal fade and only light checking, with playwear as noted above. Played but not abused, This old Strat is ready for the next 50 years. Excellent - Condition.
