Fender Competition Mustang Model Solid Body Electric Guitar (1971), made in Fullerton, California, serial # 313483, Competition Orange with Racing Stripe finish, alder body, maple neck, rosewood fingerboard, black hard shell case.

This 1971 Fender Mustang was built near the end of the run for the rather whimsical 'competition' version of the model, with the orange body finish and red 'racing' stripe on the body but a natural headstock. This orange variant is by far the rarest of the Competition models, heavily outsold by the Blue and red metallic versions. The Mustang series was Leo Fender's last original design for the company that bore his name, and has endured as a classic in the student priced arena. The light, handy and good-sounding Mustang has proven popular with many pro-level players as well. This one originally had pots dated to the 16th week of 1971 but the features (including the snazzy pearloid pickguard) are nearly identical to 1960's models.

Overall length is 39 3/4 in. (101 cm.), 12 1/4 in. (31.1 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 5/8 in. (4.1 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 24 in. (610 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.). This guitar is in good condition but shows signs of having been exposed to a rather damp environment sometime in the past. There is flaking to the finish in several areas including the body edges on the treble side cutaway horn and the top of the body near the stripe. The headstock shows checking and there is a strip of finish flaked off the back as well. The electronics have been reworked due to moisture damage; The original pickups are still intact but the pots and switches have been replaced-the originals are included but corroded enough to make them of questionable utility. The guitar plays well and sounds as it should, a good player's example of this rare Mustang variant. Very Good + Condition.
