Gibson LG-2 Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1951), made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, serial # 7043-14, sunburst top, dark stained back and sides finish, mahogany back, sides and neck, spruce top, rosewood fingerboard, original grey chipboard case.
This is a fine playing early 1950s example of an LG-2, Gibson's classic smaller body flat-top guitar model from the 1940s and '50s. Typical features include a sunburst top finish, small tortoise celluloid pickguard, small rectangle bridge, triple-bound top, and single-bound back. The postwar block Gibson logo is the earliest version with the "joined" dot, on a headstock still showing the prewar tapering sides. The Kluson Deluxe tuners are the earliest version with the shaft not going all the way through the housing. This guitar has a comfortable round-backed neck, slimmer than the wartime "baseball bat" but with a bit more depth than the typical 1950s style. Overall a very nice instrument, a bit played-in but not abused.
Overall length is 39 1/2 in. (100.3 cm.), 14 3/8 in. (36.5 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 5/16 in. (11 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.).
This is a nice original example of a very early 1950s LG-2, showing some finish wear but no major damage. It has had a recent neck set and the frets have recently been leveled, making for an excellent player. The original tuners have new buttons but there are no other alterations. The original bridge does not appear to have ever been lowered and/or reattached, which is a minor miracle on these earlier Gibson flat-tops.
The guitar also shows no cracks anywhere, once again fairly rare to find almost 70 years on. There are small dings to the finish overall, some small areas of pickwear to the top (mostly just on the lower edge of the sound hole rim), and some odd long scratches to the finish on the upper side of the top we can't quite explain! This is another very fine-sounding old LG with a bright and powerful sound, still with its original chipboard case. Very Good + Condition.
