Danelectro Shorthorn Model Electric Bass Guitar (1963), made in Neptune, NJ, serial # 1023, copper lacquer with white vinyl edging finish, Masonite and pine body, poplar neck with rosewood fingerboard.

A super nice all original example of the classic 1960's Danelectro 'shorthorn' 4-string bass. These compact creations are not the rarest of old Dan-o's but usually turn up much more worn than this one! This copper-top beauty is from 1963 with all the "classic" Dan-o features: semi-hollow Masonite and pine body, white pebble vinyl side covering, "seal" shaped Masonite pickguard and a single lipstick tube pickup with tone and volume controls and 3-way tone modifier switch. The specific combination of features for this year are the older-style openback Waverly tuners (replaced with the inferior in-house "Skate Key" tuners the next year), neck tilt device under the heel, "Totally Shielded" headstock logo and early 2-piece metal strap buttons. The short 15-fret neck has Brazilian rosewood fingerboard with the famous "coke bottle" headstock with vertical "Danelectro" logo and aluminum nut. This is an amazingly handy, easy playing and great sounding bass with a nice combination of thump and the traditional Danno twang factor.

Overall length is 38 3/4 in. (98.4 cm.), 13 1/4 in. (33.7 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 3/4 in. (4.4 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 29 1/2 in. (749 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.). Very clean, all original; there are small scrapes and dings overall and some wear the headstock top edge. There is finish checking and some copper color worn on the back of the neck, but not a lot of wear overall. A lovely example overall, one of the best of these we have had. Excellent Condition.
