Fender Jaguar Model Solid Body Electric Guitar (1965), made in Fullerton, California, serial # L99601, Lake Placid Blue lacquer finish, alder body, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, original black hard shell case.
This is an extremely nice early CBS-era Fender Jaguar, in a custom color finish that is all original and beautifully preserved. The guitar has all the expected 1965 features: an unbound rosewood fingerboard with pearl dot inlay, white plastic (instead of celluloid) pickguard and the transitional gold headstock logo. The finish is a beautiful Lake Placid Blue lacquer with the matching headstock. It carries a very late "L" series number, only a few hundred numbers away from the beginning of the "F" plate series that was applied starting towards the end of 1965. The neck carries an August '65 date, and the pots are dated to the 30th week of that year. This guitar is a great example, an excellent player and complete except the flip-up mute plate is present but not functional-the foam is long gone (this could be restored if desired).
Despite recent gains in popularity the Fender Jaguar remains an under-appreciated guitar with several interesting features. The 24" scale length is shorter than other professional grade Fenders, and it was intended to be easier to play with the heavy strings common at the time. The pickups are optimized for clarity and crispness…all factors that led to the Jaguar losing popularity in the late '60's as twang went out and slinky strings, distortion and crunch came in! Custom color Jaguars were made in decent numbers but are still relatively rare compared to their sunburst counterparts. This was the top-of-the line Fender solidbody in 1965 and was an expensive, flashy and very high quality guitar.
Overall length is 40 in. (101.6 cm.), 14 in. (35.6 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 5/8 in. (4.1 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 24 in. (610 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.). All original, some light wear overall with minor chips and dings and there is some wear through the finish on the sides of the neck. There is a small amount of fret wear in the lower positions. The Lake Placid Blue finish has hardly any checking and very little fade-the blue is much truer than most survivors as the top lacquer clear coat often yellows over time. A super nice example of a custom color '65 Jag, complete with a clean original case. Excellent Condition.
