Gibson SG Junior Model Solid Body Electric Guitar (1965), made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, serial # 502660, cherry lacquer finish, mahogany body and neck, rosewood fingerboard.
This gleaming cherry SG Junoir was built in mid/late-1965, the last year of Gibson's classic electric era. The C-profile neck is the slimmer 1 5/8" style used from this time until the end of the '60's but all the other features (old-style neck joint, small pickguard, small control cavity) are still '64 and earlier spec. This guitar mounts one very hot P-90 and chrome hardware with an exceptionally good neck angle and is a great example of Gibson's liveliest budget guitar. 1965 is the last great year for these guitars, by '66 the design was heavily modified to speed production. This one has pots dated the 29th week of 1965. The SG Junior was and remains a very popular guitar, with good reason…Gibson may have built a lot of these but not many have survived this nicely!
Overall length is 39 3/8 in. (100 cm.), 13 1/4 in. (33.7 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 1/4 in. (3.2 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.). Very clean overall; only some light wear mostly on the edges. Finish still shiny, with a couple of spots of what looks like sloppy finishing from the factory (1965 was the height of the guitar boom, after all-over 3500 Juniors were shipped out that year!)or perhaps some old residual polish marks. An excellent player, the neck angle and break angle over the vibrato are especially good on this guitar, and the Vibrola works unusually well. A very fine player, it does have the late-1965 slimmer neck profile but still some depth to the profile. A very nice example of the last version of the original style SG Junior, before the 1966 revamp with the larger pickguard and "swimming pool" rout underneath. Overall Excellent Condition.
