Kalamazoo KHG-14 Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar, c. 1939, made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, sunburst top, dark back and sides finish, mahogany back and sides, spruce top; mahogany neck with rosewood fingerboard, yellow soft shell case.

A well played-in but good sounding example of a fairly rare Kalamazoo guitar, the KHG-14. This was the originally Hawaiian version of the popular KG-14 flat top, but did not have a square neck nor flush frets and thus makes a very easy conversion to standard. This one is fully set up for Spanish play, and is a very nice player an excellent sound. The 12-fret neck/body junction on this guitar makes a very different feeling instrument from the standard 14-fret KG-14, and gives a somewhat richer tone. This one has a nice darkly shaded sunburst top and is quite attractive. The neck is a quite chunky round profile and comfortable for its size, feeling not unlike the later 1940's wartime Gibson necks. The model was only available for a few years in the late 1930's, and is far less common than its standard Spanish-style brother-this particular guitar was shipped outside the US at some point as is marked "Made In USA" on both the back of the headstock and an internal label.

Overall length is 38 1/8 in. (96.8 cm.), 14 3/4 in. (37.5 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 3/8 in. (11.1 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 7/8 in. (48 mm.). This guitar has a good deal of general wear and some repair work but remains an excellent player's instrument. It has been refretted and the bridge cut down somewhat, and lacquered over. Ther pearl dots from the bridge have been removed and the spots patched. There is general finish wear, with some pick scrapes near the fingerboard but no major losses to the lacquer. There is a long repaired crack on the lower treble bout, with a a small patched-in area. The Kluson strip tuners are original with some typical corrosion, but perfectly functional. All in all a really cool and good sounding pre-WWII ladder braced flat top. Very Good + Condition.
