Bacon Model 2 Model Banjo Ukulele (1927), made in Groton CT, shaded maple finish, maple neck and rim, ebony fingerboard, original black chipboard case.
This very fancy maple Bacon Style 2 is one of our very favorite banjo-ukes, and just about the best sounding openback ever made. It is the same general design as the much plainer Style 1, but built with fancier woods and fittings. The neck and rim are maple construction with very high-grade hardware, including a heavy plated brass hoop and the rim is metal capped on both sides. The laminated flame maple neck has an ebony fingerboard with fairly elaborate shaped pearl inlay and the headstock is inlaid with a pearl "Bacon" script logo. This was the one of the more expensive banjo ukes of its day and is still of much higher quality than most other banjo-ukes, then or now.
Overall length is 22 in. (55.9 cm.), 8 in. (20.3 cm.) diameter head, and 2 3/4 in. (7 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 13 3/4 in. (349 mm.). Width of nut is 1 1/4 in. (32 mm.). A lovely example; all original except for a clear overspray on the back of the neck and the tailpiece cover is missing. The shaded finish is worn away on the neck of the neck in the first position and the headstock has some scratches and dings. Fingerboard has light divots, frets are excellent, plating is very fine. Exceptionally fine sound, plays excellent, includes the original chip case in very good shape. Excellent - Condition.
