Gibson L-0 Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar, c. 1940, made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, black lacquer finish, mahogany back sides and neck, spruce top, rosewood fingerboard, black hard shell case.

This is black-finished L-0 from the end of the 1930's, the time of the model's second run at Gibson. The 1937-42 L-0 was the lowest priced flat top in Gibson's line, featuring an ebony finish overall, bound top and back, and simple script headstock logo. Differences from the slightly more expensive (at the time) L-00 are cosmetic only, and both models are known for their truly excellent sound and easy handling. This one has single binding top and back, a bound soundhole edge but no inlaid rings, Kluson-branded flat plate tuners and a the typical "Firestripe" celluloid pickguard.

Overall length is 39 7/8 in. (101.3 cm.), 14 3/4 in. (37.5 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 3/8 in. (11.1 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.). This guitar has general wear overall but what a great sound! One of the lightest WWII era L-0's we have ever encountered, this one has been well played but well cared for. There is a lot of finish loss to the back of the neck and some divots in the fingerboard, but the rest of the guitar has only small dings and scrapes-especially to the edge of the peghead. There is a patch of wear by the soundhole edge on the treble side, and a couple of scratches. No cracks apparent, the bridge is original but has been reglued, probably more than once. An excellent player, this is one of the best sounding of this model we have had, with a huge rich sound. Excellent - Condition.
