19th Century Model 5 String Banjo (unlabelled), c. 1870's, made in USA, natural varnish finish, rosewood veneered maple rim, mahogany neck with ebony fingerboard, black coffin case.

A very interesting if no longer completely original American banjo from the just post-Civil War era. Large rim with unusual square-end hooks, carved dowel, long scale chubby neck with squared headstock topped off with a double scoop. Comes with a very fine original case, rounded coffin style that hinges open at the end. Plays and sounds extremely well, an unusual piece.

Overall length is 35 3/4 in. (90.8 cm.), 12 1/2 in. (31.8 cm.) diameter head, and 2 1/2 in. (6.4 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 27 1/2 in. (698 mm.). Width of nut is 1 3/8 in. (35 mm.).

Planetary tuners and fiberskin head fitted. A brass tone ring also looks to have been added later to the original rim. A very interesting and good-playing 19th century banjo. Generally Excellent + Condition.
