Gibson L-00 Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar, c. 1931, made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, black lacquer finish, mahogany back, sides and neck; spruce top, rosewood fingerboard.
Here's another guitar that "doesn't exist" according to the books: an extremely early L-00 model with a 12-fret neck. This is a fantastic-sounding guitar, built extraordinarily light with a really powerful singing resonance. Black finish overall, top single bound with no back binding, 3-ply celluloid soundhole ring, and small silver script 1920's style "The Gibson" logo. The L-00 was first listed for sale on the November 1931 price list, and this must be one of the very first ever produced.
The neck is quite flat and shallow, completely different from the 14-fret V-necked L-00's that would soon follow. One unusual feature is the lack of an endpin; one was never installed on this instrument. A further oddity is that this was an exported guitar, probably to Canada, and is marked with "Made in USA" stamped on the back of the headstock and has an internal label reading "Made In USA by Gibson Inc. Kalamazoo MI". This is a well-played but extremely rare and great-sounding guitar.
Overall length is 38 1/4 in. (97.2 cm.), 14 3/4 in. (37.5 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 1/4 in. (10.8 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 3/4 in. (44 mm.).
Well-worn overall but eminently playable; one long side crack on the treble side repaired solidly but less than beautifully. A lot of overall finish wear, scratches, and dings with some noticeable playwear through the finish on the top, but overall a nicely original guitar with no modifications. Very Good + Condition.
