Gibson BR-4 Model Tube Guitar Amplifier, c. 1947, made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, two-tone Tolex finish.
This is a very fine early example of a just-postwar BR-4, Gibson's midline amplifier of the era. Priced at $125.00, this was the successor to the celebrated pre-WWII EH-150, arguably the first successful professional guitar amp.
The BR-4 has a bottom mounted chassis with two 6v6 tube output, rated at 12-24 watts. A single Utah brand 12" field coil speaker is mounted above, behind rather quaint radio-cabinet gold fabric with twin wood-and-metal guard rails ("kick guards") mounted vertically over the opening.
The back panel is finished in black with a seldom seen 1946 era transitional-script "Gibson, Kalamazoo Michigan" logo. There are three inputs, one "Microphone" and two "Instrument" with a separate volume control for each channel and a master tone each carrying a classic "chicken head" knob. The two-tone cabinet has what looks suspiciously like a Populuxe kitchen drawer-pull for a carrying handle!
This is a more lightly built amp than the contemporary BR-1 (see our stock #2675), made to a lesser price but still fully professional grade, with the typical rich tone of early Gibson amps. A fine useable amp and a great collection mate for 1940's Gibson electric Spanish or steel guitars.
Height is 18 in. (45.7 cm.), 16 1/2 in. (41.9 cm.) width, and 8 1/4 in. (21 cm.) deep.
Outside clean with minor wear, excellent overall; looks to be all original except newer grounded power cord added. Some staining to grill fabric is only major cosmetic issue.
Works well with a powerful sound. Excellent Condition.
