Fender Precision Model Solid Body Electric Bass Guitar (1973), made in Fullerton, California, serial # 394207, sunburst polyester finish, alder body, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, black gig bag case.

This Fender Precision Bass dates to the early 1970s but still maintains more of a late '60s vibe than basses from even a couple of years later. The 3-color sunburst is a bit less bright in the center than '66-'68 era examples but remains nicely unfaded. Old-school P-Bass features like the chrome bridge and pickup covers, tortoise plastic pickguard and the fingerrest below the strings still lend it a classic look. The slightly heavier poly finish, larger headstock decal, bridge with solid non-serrated saddles and the long "G" string screw and most notably the narrower "B" nut width on the neck are standard features of this time as the '70s rolled on.

The serial number on the neckplate is typical for the turn of 1972-3. The neck is stamped FEB 7* on the heel; it could read either 2 or 3 but based on the pot code of 7305 we'll say '73. This bass looks great but is also a fine player, marginally lighter at well under 9Lbs. than many from this decade with the very strong midrangey growl typical of the period. It is strung with period green-silk flatwound strings and overall one of the nicer '70s Fender basses we have had of late, a classic in its own right and now 50+ years later as popular as ever.

Overall length is 45 7/8 in. (116.5 cm.), 12 7/8 in. (32.7 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 5/8 in. (4.1 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 34 in. (864 mm.). Width of nut is 1 9/16 in. (40 mm.)., 8.7 lbs.

Overall this is a nice clean and original bass. There is some very light finish wear to the all original poly finish on body, the clear neck finish is very clean with only minimal wear. The hardware is all original and complete except for the bridge cover, which is a repro, though the screws remain original! The chrome pickup cover and the plastic finger rest are still intact, the completely hardened foam under the pickups has been supplemented with newer foam to allow proper height adjustment. The plating on the tuners shows the most wear on the instrument

The neck is very straight and the original frets show very little wear; this bass likely had flatwound strings on it for most of its life as indeed it still does now. A Sticker from Eddie Bell Guitar Headquarters in Manhattan is on the back of the headstock, certifying this as a "New Yawk" bass for decades. This is an excellent playing early '70's Precision, now just over 50 years old and ready for another half-century of bottom end goodness. The strings are period as well and have the classic flatwound thump and bark, different from most modern strings. Whatever case it may have had is gone, so it lives in a modern gig bag. Overall Excellent Condition.
