Gibson ES-140T Formerly Owned by Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day Model Thinline Hollow Body Electric Guitar (1959), made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, serial # S8249-17, sunburst top, dark back and sides finish, laminated maple body, mahogany neck with rosewood fingerboard, black tolex hard shell case.
This ES-140T extremely cool little Gibson and a surprisingly great sounding guitar. The small 3/4 size ES-140T archtop was offered through much of the 1950's, described by Gibson as perfect for students, "ladies" or guitarists desiring a compact hollow archtop. Starting in 1956 the guitar was changed to a less than 2" wide thinbody format, making for an even handier package. This very nice example shows signs of mostly light use is in nearly all original condition.
Looking deceptively almost like a toy ES-175 the ES-140T is in fact a fully professional quality instrument with a great-feeling round profile neck, single P-90 pickup, dark sunburst finish and simple trim. With the small body cavity the tone is a quite a bit brighter and snappier than the typical ES-175 and other full-depth hollowbodies. This 1959 ES-140T looks fabulous, plays beautifully and has an amazingly big smooth tone for such a small instrument.
This ES-140T includes a signed certificate stating it was previously owned by Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day, and the next owner was told it served primarily as a "bus guitar" while the band was touring, which makes a lot of sense as it feels somewhat like a hollowbody Les Paul Junior.
Overall length is 37 in. (94 cm.), 12 3/4 in. (32.4 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 7/8 in. (4.8 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 22 3/4 in. (578 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.).
This guitar is really quite clean overall, showing signs of light use but no heavy wear. The all original finish shows some light checking and minor dings and scuffs. The plastic pickup cover has a deep scratch on the lower front corner of the face. The hardware is all original except the tailpiece baseplate has been replaced with a later chrome part (these sometimes shear at the bend) but the arms and crossbar are the original nickel plated pieces.
The fingerboard has some noticeable divots in the lower positions but the frets appear original with only some light wear, mostly under the second string. The guitar plays very well and resides in a more recent HSC with the signed Green Day provenance sale certificate dated 2-7-19 included. Overall Excellent - Condition.
