Gibson UB-2 Model Banjo Ukulele (1926), made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, brown stain finish, laminated maple rim, maple neck, original black canvas case.

This is superb early example of the UB-2, the initial vanguard of Gibson's re-designed "Mastertone" era banjo-ukes. This was the first model illustrated in the Gibson catalog and likely the first one issued, followed shortly by the 6-inch rim UB-1 and the full resonator-and-flange UB-3 and UB-4. UB-2's are more commonly seen with brown mahogany or sunburst finishes, often with fancier binding and diamond fingerboard inlay. This elegantly simple original version with a plain unbound neck and large dot inlay is something of a rarity.

This UB-2 features an 8-inch head, closed back with a flat plate resonator, maple neck and rim with a rosewood fingerboard and bone nut. A single Gibson co-ordinator rod (a new device at the time) secures the neck and allows the angle to be adjusted. This is great-sounding banjo ukes as well as a neat Gibson collectible. This one is nicely original and an excellent player, an charming instant trip back to the "Vo-De-O-Do" era.

Overall length is 21 1/2 in. (54.6 cm.), 8 in. (20.3 cm.) diameter head, and 3 1/8 in. (7.9 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 14 in. (356 mm.). Width of nut is 1 1/4 in. (32 mm.).

This nearly 100 year old Banjo remains very nice overall, quite clean and original down to a period skin head and maple bridge. The plating shows some typical wear as does the finish on the back of the neck in the first position but overall this instrument does not show signs of a lot of use since the flapper era. It is also a very good sounding banjo, louder than it looks and fairly bright, an excellent player still in the original canvas case. Overall Excellent Condition.
