Fender Jaguar Model Solid Body Electric Guitar (1965), made in Fullerton, California, serial # L66694, Candy Apple Red lacquer re- finish, alder body, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, black tolex hard shell case.

This is a vibey if heavily restored early CBS-era custom-color Jaguar, with a recent relic refinish to the body and a mix of original and repro hardware. The body only has been refinished in correct Candy Apple Red lacquer with the proper silver undercoat, and given a relic treatment to harmonize with the well-worn original CAR headstock. Besides the original body and neck the fittings are a mix of original and newer: original parts include the neck pickup, tremolo plate and bridge, neckplate with the original serial number, knobs and strap buttons. More recent repro parts include the bridge pickup, the tuners, the upper and lower control sections including all pots, the switches and switch plate, the pickguard and the trem arm.

This Jaguar shows the standard 1965 features including an unbound rosewood fingerboard with pearl dot inlay and a transitional gold logo on the headstock. The original Candy Apple Red lacquer finish remains on the headstock; the body has been correctly refinished to match including the correct undercoating, "paint stick" mark and a checking/medium relic treatment to match the condition of the headstock. The neckplate carries the correct late "L" series number, The neck is ink-stamped March '65.

While not fully original this Jaguar is still a real six-string hot rod in a very convincing Candy Apple Red finish. This flashy Jag looks fabulous and in its worn-in metallic red-and-chrome livery carries a serious 1960s vibe. Candy Apple Red was one of Fender's most popular custom colors, and it's easy to see why. The deep but bold metallic red came direct from the California custom car palette, and the Jaguars' chrome accents make this instrument look fast just sitting still!

Despite recent gains in popularity the Fender Jaguar remains an under-appreciated guitar with several interesting features. The 24" scale length is shorter than other professional grade Fenders, and it was intended to be easier to play with the heavy strings common at the time. The pickups are optimized for clarity and crispness...all factors that led to the Jaguar losing popularity in the late '60's as twang went out and slinky strings, distortion and crunch came in! Custom Color Jaguars were made in decent numbers but are still relatively rare compared to their sunburst counterparts. This guitar is a great player with all the looks of a worn-in original Candy Apple '65 in fully giggable condition.

Overall length is 40 in. (101.6 cm.), 14 in. (35.6 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 5/8 in. (4.1 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 24 in. (610 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.).

This Jaguar is a heavily reworked instrument but maintains an original look, showing some fairly heavy wear overall. Of course the body is a relic lacquer refinish and the wear there was purposely applied! The original Candy Apple Red finish on the headstock has noticeable checking and numerous small dings and chips to the edges. There is wear through the finish down to the maple on much of the back of the neck, giving that lovely "Played-In Fender" feel. The gold portion of the Fender logo decal has darkened somewhat, something oddly typical of 1965 in particular; the "Fender" section is intact while most of the "Jaguar" portion is missing.

There is some minor corrosion to the original hardware, including the neck plate, bridge saddles and trem baseplate but most of the chrome is still quite shiny. Original parts are the body (with newer finish) and neck (original finish), the neck pickup, tremolo plate and bridge, neckplate with the original serial number and screws, knobs and strap buttons. Repro parts include the bridge pickup, the correct style tuners, the upper control sections and lower switchplate, the pickguard and the trem arm. Virtually all the wiring including all pots, switches and caps are newer.

The guitar has been refretted with slightly larger than period wire; the fingerboard has some feelable divots in the lower positions but the bone nut remains original. This is a cool player, with some interesting sounds from its mixed pickup complement. While not an all original guitar it looks and plays great, and would make an excellent performance/touring instrument. It resides in a solid if slightly battered non-Fender rectangular hard shell case. Overall Very Good + Condition.
