Gibson J-45 Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1996), made in Bozeman, Montana, serial # 92556007, sunburst top, dark back and sides finish, mahogany back and sides, spruce top; mahogany neck with rosewood fingerboard, original brown tolex hard shell case.

This 1996 Gibson J-45 was built by Gibson's excellent acoustic shop in Bozeman, Montana, then making the best flat tops the company had offered since the 1950s. While it carries the "Only a Gibson is good enough" banner on the headstock it is not strictly a re-issue of a 1940s model but carries a unique mix of features from different eras. The back and sides are the traditional mahogany with a dark sunburst spruce top. The top is triple bound and the back single bound, finished in dark natural.

The fairly slim one-piece mahogany neck has more of a "V" profile than most Gibsons since the late 1930s, an interesting if slightly quixotic choice as this was never originally a J-45 feature. It is topped with a slightly larger headstock sporting "Gibson Deluxe" keystone button tuners. The scale is the standard Gibson 24 3/4" with a 1 11/16" nut; the rosewood fingerboard is unbound with pearl dot inlay. The small pickguard is the 1940s shape while the rosewood bridge is the post-WWII "top belly" pattern. This is a lovely guitar with a still developing sound nearly 30 years on, a worthy successor the much-beloved Gibsons of the 1940's and early '50s.

Overall length is 41 in. (104.1 cm.), 16 in. (40.6 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 11/16 in. (11.9 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.).

This is a very clean guitar overall, showing some light checking and small dings, scratches and scuffs mostly to the back but no really serious wear. An undersaddle pickup has been fitted to the bridge, wired to an endpin jack; there are a couple of extra tiny holes in the bridge plate probably related to this. A strap button has been added at the heel. The frets show some very minor wear not affecting playability. This is an excellent sounding and playing guitar, a nice representation of the superior work Gibson's Bozeman shop was turning out in the 1990s. It resides in the original Gibson HSC with the original soundhole Humidifier with instructions and a passel of original paperwork. Excellent Condition.
