Darren Hippner Barbero pattern Model Flamenco Guitar (2013), made in Point Roberts, WA., serial # 785, natural finish, Cypress back and sides, Bavarian spruce top; Spanish cedar neck with ebony fingerboard, gig bag case.

Darren R. Hippner has been a professional luthier building guitars full time for 30 years since 1994 by himself in his own one man shop. There are no associates, apprentices or employees; every Hippner guitar is handcrafted by Darren alone using primarily hand tools. His guitars include a wide variety of designs; from Concert instruments patterned after masters such as Torres, Hauser, Ramirez & Fleta models to original designs including 8-String guitars, double top and lattice braced classicals, Steel-string acoustic dreadnaughts, parlor & 12-Strings using a wide variety of premium tonewoods.

Hippner handcrafts all of his instruments himself, using basic wood shop machinery and hand tools. By working alone, he has total control over every phase of building and can produce consistently fine musical instruments. He maximizes the potential of each piece of wood by voicing the wood and shaping the thickness graduations individually using touch, feel & tap-tones, the same way old master Italian violin luthiers and master Spanish guitar luthiers worked.

This is a 2013 Marcelo Barbero-pattern Flamenco guitar, built to that master's notoriously precise patterns with the traditional wood choices. Cypress back and sides with a Bavarian spruce top are mated to a Spanish Cedar Neck with an ebony fingerboard. The headstock facing and body bindings are rosewood and the instrument is hand-finished in lacquer. The headstock is fitted with traditional wooden peg tuners with pearl dots. There are clear Flamenco tap plates on the top and one side dot on the fingerboard at the 7th fret.

This is the first Hippner Flamenco guitar we have handled and it is a fine playing, lovely sounding instrument, especially at this price point. It offers a smooth even tone sound that still retains excellent projection and more penetrating Flamenco character. It is beautifully made and ready to gig, equipped with a well-padded gig bag.

Overall length is 38 1/2 in. (97.8 cm.), 14 1/2 in. (36.8 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 3 11/16 in. (9.4 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 25 5/8 in. (651 mm.). Width of nut is 2 in. (51 mm.).

This just over 10 year old guitar shows some play and handling wear but does not have any notable damage or repair. The top has fingermarks mostly below the strings and small random dings and dents overall, including some scratching to the upper back probably from a button. There are strap buttons added at the endblock and heel. Other than this the guitar is original as built, well seasoned by a decade's use making for an excellent playing and sounding instrument. Excellent Condition.
