Gibson SG Standard Model Solid Body Electric Guitar (1969), made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, serial # 560001, cherry lacquer finish, mahogany body and neck, rosewood fingerboard, original black hard shell case.

This is a lovely original example of the Angus Young-approved late 1960s SG Standard, a very popular guitar over the years that is now most celebrated for the AC/DC lead guitarist's career-long patronage. The SG Standard from this period has several distinctive features setting it apart from both earlier and later models. These include a large shaped plastic pickguard covering more of the face with the humbucking pickups mounted to it, a dark cherry finish and chrome hardware including the long-plate Maestro Vibrola. The knobs are the "Witch Hat" style common to the era and the tuners are Kluson Deluxe (by now carrying the "Gibson" brand) with double-ring buttons.

The pot codes in this guitar are 137-6852, indicating a build date likely fairly early in 1969. The late-'60s mahogany body has a bit less sculpting than earlier examples but offers one big structural advantage: a much stronger neck joint with a long, rounded heel compared to earlier models. As a result, these guitars almost never have the sort of heel breakage problems common to earlier '60s SGs.

The neck has the narrow (nominally) 1 5/8" nut width adopted in 1965-6, but is actually more like 1 9/16". The round-backed neck profile is slim down by the nut but gets noticeably deeper as it approaches the body with a nice solid feel. There is no volute or "Made In USA" stamp yet. This guitar has a good neck angle for the model and the vibrato (complete with the oft-missing plastic-tipped handle) actually works fine.

The SG Standard was then and remains a very popular guitar, with good reason. The design changed in 1965-6 from the original Les Paul/SG to this "large guard" variant, and was modified again in 1970 back closer to the original format, so this 1966-70 style Standard was only in production for about 4 years. 1969 was a big year for the model with 3354 shipped, the highest yearly total to date by far. In the hyper amplified late 1960s the SG really came into its own as the perfect guitar for the times. We try not to court cliche too obviously, but this is the definition of a "Rock Machine", born to be cranked for Angus-style licks and beyond!

Overall length is 39 3/4 in. (101 cm.), 13 in. (33 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 1/4 in. (3.2 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 9/16 in. (40 mm.).

This is a nice, clean example overall, remaining completely original and unaltered after 55 years. The finish shows just small dings, scratches and scuffing, most heavily on the back but no actual heavy wear. The headstock edges have a few small dings and chips. The chrome hardware is mostly quite clean. One of the tuner buttons is set a bit deeper on the shaft than the rest so there may have been a repair of some sort there, but it is solid and works fine.

The original frets look to have been crowned down just a bit but this is a really fine-playing and sounding example of the classic '69 SG Standard with two rampaging patent # humbuckers and a good neck angle. It comes complete in its original earlier-60s style yellow lined shaped hard shell case, more worn than the guitar but fully solid. Overall Excellent Condition.
