Collings SJ Indian Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (2021)
Collings SJ Indian Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (2021), made in Austin, MN, serial # 31404, natural lacquer finish, Indian rosewood back and sides, spruce top; mahogany neck with ebony fingerboard, original black tolex hard shell case.
This is one of the more original of Collings modern designs, a rosewood version of the 16" narrow waisted Jumbo as pioneered by the Larson Brothers in the 1930s and Gibson in the '50s. The "Indian" in the name refers to the origin of the rosewood used for the back and sides, not any Native American lore! This is a medium fancy guitar with multiple binding on all edges and wavy diamond inlay on the fingerboard and peghead. This is how Collings describe the model:
"The SJ is our version of what is commonly called a small Jumbo. Although the 16" lower bout is slightly wider than a dreadnought, and the sides almost as deep, the tight curve at the waist creates in a very different sound chamber. SJs typically have a more pronounced midrange response when compared to a dreadnought. Players looking for the bass and overall volume of a large guitar but with lots of treble clarity and midrange crunch, often find just what they need in the curvaceous SJ"
This is a very nice instrument and we feel one of Collings more interesting an original offerings, a lovely version of what often feels like an underserved design. The sound is crisp but powerful with more depth than some, suitable for a wide range of musical styles.
Overall length is 41 1/2 in. (105.4 cm.), 16 1/4 in. (41.3 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 7/16 in. (11.3 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 25 1/2 in. (648 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.).
This is a very clean guitar, looking minimally used showing only very light handling marks and practically no actual wear besides one tiny dink mark in the top. There is a bit of minor finish flaking on the back over the lower end of the marquetry backstrip and a small stress mark on the top behind the bridge that looks like a possible crack but is not! The guitar plays perfectly with a huge sound, housed in the original HSC with the Collings warranty card included. Excellent + Condition.
