Gretsch Black Penguin Custom Shop G6134 Model Solid Body Electric Guitar (2010), made in Corona, CA, serial # UC10090619, black nitrocellulose lacquer finish, laminated maple top, mahogany body and neck with ebony fingerboard, original hard shell case.

This product of the Gretsch USA Custom shop is a re-issue of a guitar that never existed: a 1950s White Penguin in a jet black finish. The Penguin was the White Falcon's diminutive and whimsical little sister, originally made in miniscule quantities at best. Today this rare bird is a far more popular guitar, basically a super customized, spiffed up Duo Jet with Cadillac-level hardware. As with the line of modern Jets it is built on a chambered mahogany body with an arched maple top, in this case finished in authentic nitrocellulose lacquer.

The USA Gretsch Custom Shop led by Master Builder Stephen Stern produces high end, accurate modern iterations of classic Gretsch models, both reproductions or in this case extensions of the company's history. This ebony beauty sports the winged vertical headstock logo, engraved pearl fingerboard inlays, Cadillac "G" tailpiece, gold Grover Imperial tuners and gold sparkle binding topped off by the unique ruby-jeweled knobs on the chambered body. The re-created DeArmond Dyna-Sonic pickups give it that classic "Great Gretsch sound" and the build quality is exceptional. And don't forget the little waddling penguin engraved on the pickguard.!

This guitar bears the Gretsch custom shop logo on the back of the headstock, along with the facsimile signature of Stephen Stern. Truly this is as close as most mortals will ever get to an original late '50s example of this mythical bird, and in a finish that was never offered at the time. This is a fine player, a badass stunner to look at and no slouch in the sound department either.

Overall length is 41 1/8 in. (104.5 cm.), 13 1/2 in. (34.3 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 15/16 in. (4.9 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 24 1/2 in. (622 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.).

This now nearly 15-year old guitar shows a factory light relicing treatment including finish checking and plating wear, so it's hard to say if any actual subsequent genuine wear has been added. The frets and fingerboard show hardly any wear so it appears minimally played. This black bird comes in the original Gretsch-logo HSC with the original strap and a passel of Gretsch paperwork. Overall Excellent Condition.
