Fender Stratocaster '62 re-Issue AVRI Model Solid Body Electric Guitar (1986), made in Fullerton, California, serial # V021871, black finish, alder body, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, original tweed hard shell case.

Around the time the CBS/Fender era was coming to an end, criticism that the corporation had long been sacrificing quality had begun to sink in. A group of Fender executives initiated a project to re-issue selected models in their older formats to prove that they could achieve a return to pre-CBS quality. This led to carefully made reproductions of 1950s and '60s classics that are now known by the collector's acronym -- "AVRI" for "American Vintage Re Issue". The first ones were made in the old Fullerton factory, with production subsequently resumed after the CBS/Fender split in the reorganized company's Corona facility. The Vintage Re-issue Stratocasters were the first models built in that new location and a flagship instrument for the new smaller Fender operation.

This snazzy looking Black 1986 '62 reissue Stratocaster is from the early post-Fullerton-made line; the neck is pencil dated 11-13-86 so at the time it was made production there had only been going on just over one year. Designed as a close copy of the original 1962 Stratocaster, it features a 21-fret maple neck with a rosewood fingerboard, vintage-size frets, alder body, white laminated pickguard, 3 American Vintage single coil black bottom pickups, optional 5-way selector switch and vintage-style vibrato/bridge. The original pots are dated to the 35th week of 1986. It is all original, with the caveat that the optional 5-way switch that Fender provided with the guitar is installed. The vibrato is factory set up with 3 trem springs; the other two are still in an envelope in the case. The trem arm and bridge cover are also stock, as is the original heavy duty re-issue tweed case with some vintage style accessories.

This Strat is very nicely preserved for nearly 38 years on. It is generally thought that only a fairly small proportion of these re issues from the 1980s were finished in the custom colors offered: black, vintage white, candy apple red, lake placid blue, and fiesta red. Fiesta Red and Lake Placid Blue are considered the rarest, but black is not particularly common either. While these guitars are not EXACTLY accurate re-creations, they were far closer than anything Fender had built since 1966 to Leo's original creations and lovely guitars in their own right.

Overall length is 39 in. (99.1 cm.), 13 in. (33 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 3/4 in. (4.4 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 25 1/2 in. (648 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.).

This is a nice clean guitar overall, all original and showing its age in a just few places, without many signs of serious use. The body finish is quite well-preserved, with mostly just some checking and light handling marks. There are a few small dings in the top and back but no wear fully through the finish at all. The neck is just as clean, with some minimal wear to the original frets in the lower positions. There is some light corrosion on the tuner buttons and bridge saddles.

The original case has moderate wear but is otherwise well-preserved. A passel of paperwork is included with the hang tag booklet, vintage-style cord, and polish cloth and more still in the pocket. This is a great-looking, playing, and sounding Stratocaster that is creeping on to becoming "vintage' itself. Excellent + Condition.
