Gibson Les Paul Standard Custom Shop Model Solid Body Electric Guitar (1997), made in Nashville, TN, serial # 7-9490, sunburst top, dark back and sides finish, mahogany body, flame maple top; mahogany neck with rosewood fingerboard, original brown tolex hard shell case.

This 1997 Gibson Custom Shop Les Paul Standard (serial #7 9490) was shipped from Nashville 05/25/1997, so it has been out in the world for well over 25 years now. We reached out to Gibson's custom shop records, and they helpfully provided this info: "This is a precursor to the Class 5, not quite an R9, nor an off the shelf Standard. This is a high end, Custom Shop built Les Paul Standard. In the sense that you can buy a Les Paul Custom and that you can buy a Custom Historic Model, this is more like the high end production equivalent of a Les Paul Standard but is not a specific year reissue. It is fitted with nickel hardware. These can have the '57 Classics or 490T/490R pickup set - Alnico Modern both are what they were using then so it was one of those two sets. The pickups did not have labels on the bottom."

We can add this is a lovely guitar, with a fairly delicate subtle sunburst to the top and no notable flame figure. There is a "Gibson Custom Shop" decal on the lower part of the headstock rear and an inked-on '50s style serial number. There was never a pickguard mounted and the tuners are Grover Rotomatics so it actually most resembles a '50s Standard as it would have been played in the 1970s! The bridge is a chrome Nashville style Tune-O-Matic so we would assume it was changed at some point. At just under 10 Lbs. this is medium-weight for a later Les Paul, plays great and really sings when cranked.

Overall length is 39 in. (99.1 cm.), 13 in. (33 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 2 in. (5.1 cm.) in depth at side. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.)., 9.8 lbs.

This guitar shows just light play wear overall with superficial scuffing and very minor dings and dents. It simply does not seem too have been too much played over the last quarter century. The chrome plated bridge is quite clean and likely a replacement; all else appears original. The nickel plated hardware does show a decent amount of wear or as it is termed now "Natural Relicing". The original frets show almost no wear and playability is excellent. It is housed in the original brown Tolex HSC which must have been dragged around a lot as it does show some moderately heavy wear, especially to the handle. Excellent - Condition.
