Hagstrom F-12S Model 12 String Solid Body Electric Guitar (1967), made in Sweden, serial # 668452, black lacquer finish, Baltic birch body, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, original grey chipboard case.

The Swedish-made Hagstrom line of guitars was imported to the US in the mid-late 1960's by Mershon Musical Products of New York. They were well-engineered but fairly inexpensive instruments and sold very well, especially to teenage players. The necks are quite slim, re-inforced with a very sophisticated metal-sheathed truss rod system ("The Hagstrom Secret" according to the catalogs) that keeps them true over time and very easy to play. The two single-coil pickups are controlled by a single master volume knob and a bank of switches allowing on/off for each and "Mute" and "Tone" functions.

This 12-string is one of the less common models, introduced in 1966 and available for only a few years after. This example is finished in black, which is not all that common for this model and looks wicked as a result! In general the F-12S is unusually light and handy for a 12-string, with a very good bright sound and a lot of sonic possibilities. The neck is extremely slim back-to-front, and this is one of the easiest to play 12-strings ever built.

Hagstroms in general were very popular with amateur teen combos in the mid-late 60's and remain an excellent bargain in a good quality period vintage guitar. The F-12S scored a very unusual endorsement in the '60's, being featured in company ads with The Mothers Of Invention, personally brandished by Frank Zappa! This is one of the best playing of 1960s solidbody 12-strings and one of the better instruments from the entire Hagstrom line.

Overall length is 39 5/8 in. (100.6 cm.), 13 in. (33 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 3/8 in. (3.5 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 24 1/2 in. (622 mm.). Width of nut is 1 3/4 in. (44 mm.).

This is a nice example with some light playwear but mostly original and complete. It shows some use but no abuse; the back of the neck is worn down a bit in the lower positions and there are some scattered dings and dents. It looks like all of the small slide switches may have been replaced some time back, not too surprising as the originals were pretty flimsy and often broke. Or they are just the cleanest, shiniest set we have seen! In either case this is a cool, great sounding and often overlooked 1960's 12-string in a fairly rare finish. It resides in an original 1960s Hagstrom grey chipboard case, shaped for a slightly different model but probably original to the instrument. Overall Excellent Condition.
