Matt Rubendall Jazz model Classical Guitar (2023)
Matt Rubendall Jazz model Model Classical Guitar (2023), made in Brooklyn, NY, French polish with oil finish neck finish, Indian rosewood back and sides, Italian spruce top; Honduras mahogany neck with ebony fingerboard, hard shell case.
This rakishly non-conventional concert guitar is noted Brooklyn luthier Matt Rubendall's Jazz Model, a brand new example handcrafted in 2023. The cutaway design allows high note access impossible on a standard classical and the entire guitar carries many of this maker's distinctive design touches. This instrument is optimized for the player looking for exceptional tone in a Nylon string guitar not overly bound by tradition.
The guitar is built with Indian rosewood for the back and sides with an Italian Spruce top. The body has a standard radiused back and a fully radiused top. Everything is extremely finely fitted including the hand carved binding channels. The 650mm scale Honduras Mahogany neck has an ebony fingerboard; the unusual asymmetrical headstock is faced with a Zircote headplate and fitted with Sloane tuners. The angled-edge asymmetrical bridge is made of Brazilian rosewood.
The body is finished in a fine French Polish while the neck is lightly oiled for a more organic feel. The nut and saddle are crafted from Hippo ivory. Another unusual feature is a small floating Zircote pickguard screwed to the fingerboard extension for convenience in plectrum playing, which is removable quickly and easily if not desired. The guitar is set up to operate like a concert classical but equally useful for pick-style playing with the added access provided by the cutaway and a slightly radiused finger board (20 ft. radius).
A very modern feature built into this instrument is the press fit neck, finely snugly fit to the pocket with no glue at all. This means the action is easily adjustable under full string tension thanks to a small keyhole in the back accessing the moveable neck joint. The design of this guitar is a bold mix of traditional and contemporary, while the workmanship is exemplary throughout. We find Matt's guitars to be consistently superb instruments whatever design path they follow and are always happy to have one in stock.
Overall length is 39 in. (99.1 cm.), 14 1/2 in. (36.8 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 3 1/2 in. (8.9 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 25 1/2 in. (648 mm.). Width of nut is 2 in. (51 mm.).
This guitar has a few tiny handling marks but it essentially unplayed, direct from the builder. It is a fabulous and very adaptable instrument for the modern player, with plenty of volume and an incisive but still rich sound. It resides in a molded Crossrock road case. Near Mint Condition.
