C. F. Martin D-28S Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1974), made in Nazareth, PA, serial # 339064, natural lacquer finish, rosewood back and sides, spruce top; mahogany neck with ebony fingerboard, original molded blue plastic hard shell case.

The fairly rare 1960-70s 12-fret Martin Dreadnoughts tend to be something of an under appreciated design. With a big, booming sound and wide neck, these are great old-time guitars and we think they are very often tonally more muscular than their 14-fret brethren, especially during the 1970s. This 1974 model features some lovely straight grained Indian rosewood on the back. The neck is wide but fairly slim back-to-front; the slotted headstock is fitted with the boxy Grover "Slimline" tuners Martin used only in this era.

Only 200 of this model were made in 1974, compared to over 5,000 14-fret D-28's, so when we say "comparatively rare", it's not an exaggeration! While the 14-fret Dreadnought has generally held the spotlight at Martin, discerning players often find the 12-fret design offer a livelier sound despite the heavier build characteristic of this era. This is a lovely looking, great-playing guitar with a very powerful voice.

Overall length is 40 3/8 in. (102.6 cm.), 15 7/8 in. (40.3 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 5 in. (12.7 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 25 1/2 in. (648 mm.). Width of nut is 1 7/8 in. (48 mm.).

This is a generally clean, well kept guitar for being just about 50 years old. It shows some light finish wear overall with checking to the top with scuffing and light scratching to the back, with a few small dings and dents here and there. The top has some mostly light pickwear with a small touched-up spot above the strings behind the soundhole; otherwise all finish remains original.

The neck has been neatly reset, and the guitar expertly refretted with correct style wire. The bridge and bridgeplate are original but the saddle and pickguard are replacements. The original black acetate guards of this period have usually shrunken up badly by now and practically all of them have been replaced. There are no alterations except an old mini-jack installed at the endpin; no pickup is currently fitted, there is a small stickum spot under the bridgeplate from a period contact pickup now removed. This is a nice '70s 12-fret rosewood Dreadnought, a lovely player with a powerful sound. It comes complete in the original molded blue plastic case, with one damaged latch and a period trout sticker on the lid. Overall Excellent - Condition.
