Fender Jazzmaster Model Solid Body Electric Guitar (1963), made in Fullerton, California, serial # L22255, sunburst lacquer finish, alder body, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, black tolex hard shell case.
This is a lovely and generally well preserved original example of a fully pre-CBS Fender Jazzmaster, built a couple of years before Leo's company was sold into corporate bondage! The neck is dated March 1963, the visible pot date is to the 37th week of 1962. Camelot was still in full glory when this guitar left Fullerton; CBS took over the company in January 1965 soon enough bringing a host of changes. There is often something special about these late Pre-CBS Fenders; Leo's company had gotten everything perfected and in our experience many of them are among the best of their breed.
This beautiful Jazzmaster is loaded with classic pre-CBS Fender features. These include a "round-lam" unbound rosewood fingerboard with the pre-'65 "clay" dot inlay. The 3-color sunburst finish has bold red and yellow layering. The pickguard is the nitrocellulose tortoiseshell style Celluloid which was a Fender trademark at the time. Pickups are the standard white-covered Jazzmaster units with the two-circuit wiring system introduced with this model. The neckplate sports an "L" serial number typical of 1963.
Although it never won over jazz artists as Leo intended the Jazzmaster was quite a successful guitar at the time, seen with many period players in a variety of musical genres and widely imitated overseas. After a period from the late '60s through the '70s in the shadows the Jazzmaster has been increasingly popular over the last few decades with new generations of performers re-discovering its particular charms. This one has survived the years showing some wear but mostly in fine original shape, played in just enough with a major mojo and sounding fantastic, ready for its next 60 years.
Overall length is 41 in. (104.1 cm.), 14 in. (35.6 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 1/2 in. (3.8 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 25 1/2 in. (648 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.).
This Jazzmaster remains nicely original overall showing some general wear. The original thin nitro lacquer body finish retains good color on the face with only minimal fade. The body face and more heavily the edges shows some dings, dents and minor scuffing; the back is more heavily worn with a decent amount of fairly random belt wear. The edges have a few small touched-in spots.
The neck finish is only slightly worn down on the back edges, rounder ihn profile than some with that glorious vintage Fender feel. The original frets have been crowned a bit lower than stock but still have life left in them, the fingerboard has some very light wear. All hardware is original except the trem arm is a correct repro and as is often the case the small snap on bridge cover has gone missing. This is a really great feeling, fine sounding guitar resting in a modern black Tolex HSC. Overall Excellent - Condition.
