Fender Jaguar Model Solid Body Electric Guitar (1964), made in Fullerton, California, serial # L37914, sunburst lacquer re- finish, alder body, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, original black tolex hard shell case.
This is a nicely restored, great playing and sounding solidly pre-CBS era Jaguar. Both body and neck have been very professionally refinished in lacquer without any artificial relic-ing; the overall appearance is very nice and more authentic than many. The blend of the 3-color sunburst is correct for 1964 and quite well done; this is often not the case. The neck finish is a bit thicker than the original '64 spec, and the headstock decal is a later 60's CBS-era style.
Except for a modern repro bridge all parts on the guitar are original including the pickups, electronics, frets, trem arm and even the spring-loaded mute which has been neatly re-foamed. The neck date stamp is January 64 and the pots are coded to the 21st week of that year. This guitar shows the classic 1964 Pre-CBS features including the unbound rosewood fingerboard with the old style "clay" dot inlay and the older nitrocellulose tortoiseshell style pickguard.
Even having recently undergone a revival, the Jaguar remains a somewhat under-appreciated guitar with several interesting features. The scale length is shorter than other professional-grade Fender guitars at 24", a feature designed to enhance playability. The "offset" body style, two-circuit wiring and floating vibrato are shared with the Jaguar's ancestor, the Jazzmaster, but the guitar actually feels quite different.
The unique Jaguar pickups with the chrome-plated "claw" baseplate are optimized for clarity and crispness, factors that led to the model losing popularity in the late '60s as twang went out and distortion and crunch came in! Nevertheless, these are top-of-the line 1960s Fenders and very high quality guitars, still a relative bargain in a vintage Fender instrument. This nicely restored guitar is one of the best sounding Jaguars we have had. The twang of the ages lives on!
There is a tag on the case handle indicating the guitar was worked on for Los Angeles multi-Grammy nominated record producer Billy Bush, known for Garbage, The Naked and Famous, Neon Trees, Julia Stone, Fink, Foster the People, Muse, Natasha Bedingfield, Jake Bugg, Ilse DeLange, and The Boxer Rebellion.
Overall length is 40 in. (101.6 cm.), 14 in. (35.6 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 5/8 in. (4.1 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 14 in. (356 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.).
This guitar appears only carefully used but since its restoration, with some minor scuffing and very light wear overall. All the hardware and plating remain clean as well with only light wear here and there. As noted all the hardware is original except the correct style repro bridge; the trem arm appears to have been slightly re-bent long ago. Any solder joints disconnected for the refinish have been very carefully re done; this was a very pro quality job. The neck pocket has a couple of picks used as shims that were lacquered over; they are perfectly functional so we have left this in place.
The frets are original and have been cleanly crowned showing little subsequent wear; the nut is newer (the broken original is in the case). There are a few light wear marks to the fingerboard. This is the perfect gigging Pre-CBS Jaguar; great playing and sounding, super clean looking but not so perfect as to make taking it out to play a concern. It lives in the original "no logo" Black Tolex hardshell case, which is in very solid shape as well. Restored to Excellent Condition.
