Guild F-50R-NT Custom Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1976), made in Westerly, RI, serial # 143589, natural lacquer finish, Rosewood back and sides, spruce top; laminated mahogany neck with ebony fingerboard, original black tolex hard shell case.

This is a superbly well preserved example of Guild's high-end flat top for 1976, complete with the original case and paperwork. This particular F-50R was a custom order instrument with factory double pickguards, charmingly hand-notated on the label as "F-50R-NT with 2 Pickg". Vintage Guild labels are usually fastidious about documenting the features of the instrument, unlike, say, Gibson or Gretsch. This is a fairly rare feature and gives the instrument a sort of rakish air.

Other than this cool variation this F-50R is a standard model, a large 17" jumbo body guitar with a lovely straight-grained solid rosewood back and sides, a solid spruce top multi-ply bound around the top, back and sides with a chain backstrip. The laminated mahogany neck has a bound ebony fingerboard with inlaid detailing and Emperor-style abalone & pearl split block inlays. The multi-bound headstock has a pearl Guild logo and "G" shield inlay with gold Guild branded Schaller tuners. This jumbo guitar is not a delicate instrument; it responds best to a heavier touch and when played with gusto has a huge sound and plays perfectly.

Overall length is 42 1/2 in. (108 cm.), 17 1/8 in. (43.5 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 15/16 in. (12.5 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 25 1/2 in. (648 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.).

This guitar is nicely original and extremely clean throughout. Is shows some scuffing and minor wear marks overall but really hardly anything through the finish. The binding on the neck has a few small shrinkage splits and there is some very minor wear to the wood on the treble side in the 8-11th fret area. There is a not really functional old under-bridgeplate pickup installed and an endpin jack; a more modern pickup could be easily added. Otherwise the guitar remains pretty much as it left Westerly in 1976. The original case has some external wear but still holds the original Guild warranty/care & maintenance booklet; the card was filled out and detached. This is a great strummer's guitar and just a really neat find, one of the coolest 1970s Guilds we have had. Excellent + Condition.
