C. F. Martin 00-18G Model Classical Guitar (1959), made in Nazareth, PA, serial # 166055, natural lacquer finish, mahogany back, sides and neck, spruce top, rosewood fingerboard, black hard shell case.
Shades of Willie Nelson! What we have here is a VERY well played but unaltered Martin classical guitar from 1959 that appears to have served several lifetimes over the last 64 or so years. The 00-18G is built with Martin's traditional materials: mahogany back, sides and neck and a spruce top. It uses the 20th century Martin 14-fret body shape with a 12-fret neck but internally is a delicately fan-braced like a classical guitar. The wide classical neck is topped with a slotted peghead.
This style Martin is not well remembered now, but was popular at the time with amateur and even some professional folk players strumming in the "Hoots" of the '60s. This is a sweet-sounding guitar that deserves a better reputation than it often gets. While neither "fish nor fowl" perhaps to many modern players this is an appealing creation nonetheless.
Overall length is 38 1/4 in. (97.2 cm.), 14 1/2 in. (36.8 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 1/8 in. (10.5 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 25 1/4 in. (641 mm.). Width of nut is 2 in. (51 mm.).
This Martin Classical has seen a LOT of enthusiastic in obviously not careful use over the last 60+ years, showing several repairs and a lot of honest wear. The unaltered original lacquer finish on the body is pretty much covered with scratches, nicks, scrapes and dings. The top has a large swath of deep strum wear from years of aggressive playing below the strings, but not a Trigger-like hole through the wood yet!
There are some older crack repairs; the turn of the lower bout on the top has suffered an impact to the side that has left a noticeable crack repair and small piece of missing purfling. On both sides of the lower bout, cracks have been previously been solidly but visibly glued. A finger brace on the bass side of the top has recently been reglued, other than this all of the original braces and bridge plate are well intact. The bridge has also been reglued along the bottom, with errant spots of glue along the treble side of the top.
The neck has been reset. The fingerboard has a few shallow divots between the first and third fret, as well as a handful small divots in the frets that do not affect playability. Somebody obviously ignored the "Made for Gut or Nylon strings" stamp in the body for a time! The guitar has provided someone a lifetime of music; it looks pretty ragged but has a lovely mellow sound, with a very resonant bass end. It is housed in a vintage classical-style hardshell case from Portugal. Overall Very Good Condition.
